Beacon Acquisition:
We are pleased to announce the acquisition of a new volume of poetry by Sonia Sanchez. Morning Haiku is music to the ears: a collection of haiku that celebrates the gifts of life and mourns the death of revered African American figures in the worlds of music, art, and activism. Often arranged in strings of 12 or more, the poems flow one into the other in a steady song. Sanchez is innovative, composing some haiku in new forms, including a section of two line poems, powerful verses that reflect on the long wake of 9/11. Including a previously unpublished essay on the special relevance of haiku in the 21st century, as well as the poem she was invited to write as a tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. for Barack Obama’s inaugural festivities, Morning Haiku contains a very powerful load of emotion and meaning. Beacon Press is pleased to announce the acquisition of Not Quite Paradise: An American Sojourn in Sri Lanka (tentative title) by Adele Barker. A captivating memoir of the year and a half Barker spent living and teaching in Sri Lanka, Not Quite Paradise combines personal narrative, reporting, and travelogue to provide an in-depth look at Sri Lanka, ravaged by a thirty-year war between the government and the famous Tamil Tigers, both before and immediately after the 2004 tsunami. Poignant and comprehensive, it will offer American readers an eye-opening account of a beautiful and deeply troubled place. Fall 2009
