  • The New England Quarterly; review in the March 2008 issue

“The Boston Italians will appeal to a diverse audience, including historians, sociologists, history of Boston enthusiasts, and the general public. In many ways, Boston’s Italians will find this book most rewarding because, for the first time, they have a thorough and professional history of which to be proud. More important, the story of the city’s Italian community will be better known and appreciated because of Puleo’s efforts.”

Beacon Acquisitions:

  • Beacon is happy to announce the acquisition of Steve Wilson’s PERROS ON THE PITCH: A Season Playing the Immigrant’s Game—the story of a high school soccer team comprised of the sons of Hispanic migrant workers as they take on privileged middle-class white teams in a quest for their first state championship. Woodburn High’s Bulldogs started their 2005 fall soccer season with eight undocumented student-athletes, one midfielder who had been groomed to play for a professional Mexican team, a wing player who had moved to the small Oregon town to escape L.A. gang life, and three boys who spoke almost no English. Like many young immigrants across the country, these players were caught between a Mexico they barely remembered and an America they hardly knew, as they struggled to negotiate not only their own transnational lives, but the hopes and fears of the community around them. Spring 2010.
  • Given its history of publishing progressive and queer-themed books, Beacon is delighted to announce the acquisition of its first graphic book—a nonfiction project based on the lives of gay transsexual men interviewed by cartoonist Dylan Edwards, creator of the long-running strips, “The Outfield” and “Politically InQueerect.” Fun Home author Alison Bechdel has praised Edwards’ work: “There’s something extremely kinetic about Dylan Edwards’ comics. The subtlety of both the drawing and the writing make his characters leap off the page.” Spring 2010.
