Beacon Acquisitions:
Beacon is delighted to announce the acquisition of Margaret Regans
Border Tragedies: Death and Disorder on the Arizona-Mexico Line
(tentative title). In July 2000, Regan began reporting on the escalating
chaos along the U.S.-Mexico border, particularly in Arizona, where growing
numbers of border crossings and arrests have made the state a test case for
border policies and immigration debate. Using Arizona as a microcosm, Regan
explores the larger issues surrounding the massive human migration from Mexico
to America including: the desperation that compels Mexicans to cross the border;
the militarization of the borderlands; the pile-up of unidentified bodies;
how the rights of U.S. citizens have been curtailed; and, the resulting environmental
damage. Fall 2009
After publishing Joe Mackalls critically acclaimed Plain
Secrets: An Outsider among the Amish, Beacon is happy to announce the
acquisition of Amish Exiles: The Other in our Midst (tentative
title). In this new book, Mackall profiles people in various stages of leaving
their Amish communities and explores how their experiences tell us something
about what it means to be an other in modern Americaparticularly
for Amish women who leave their communities with fewer marketable skills than
their male counterparts. Amish Exiles will raise provocative and fascinating
questions about how insular and patriarchal societies function in our contemporary
society. Spring 2010
