Beacon is excited to be publishing Mean Little deaf Queer, a
memoir by performance artist Terry Galloway. Born in 1950 in Germany
where her father was stationed as a spy for the U.S. Army, Terry spent her elementary
years in Berlin before her family returned to the States and settled in Texas.
The victim of an experimental drug given to her mother while pregnant, Terry
suffered from profound hearing loss and during her ninth year experienced a
period of hallucinations and disillusionment before a series of tumultuous medical
procedures. Theatre and performance, whether on stage or in the privacy of her
room and whether as a child at the Texas Lion's Camp for Crippled Children in
the 1960s or as a young adult at Columbia University in the 1970s, allowed Terry
to transcend and further explore her physical and emotional reality. With ferocious
candor and charming wit, Terry Galloway writes about living in her silent and
eccentric world-but that's just the surface. This is a memoir about masks, about
masking one's body while paradoxically using one's body to mask one's self.
Spring 2009.
