And it is that spirit of honesty and the willingness to confront the
ugly parts of human experience that give Inheriting the Trade its value. Nowhere
in the book does DeWolf find any real answers to their questions about redressing
the wrongs of their ancestors. But honest self-examination remains an excellent
place to start.Marjorie Kehe

Beacon Acquisition:
The advances in technology that allow for convenience in our everyday life
are often come at the detriment of our privacy. This is the central conceit
of a new book we have acquired from legal journalist Frederick Lane, author
of the forthcoming THE COURT AND THE CROSS: The Religious Right's Crusade
to Reshape the Supreme Court (July 2008). In his new book, Lane will
use accessible, jargon-free language to trace the history of technological developments
that have increased our shared interests, starting with the camera in the late
19th century, through the legal questions each development has presented. This
history will take us through developments such as Social Security numbers, credit
cards, and of course, the many uses of the internet, to show the ways in which
we have sacrificed our privacy for the benefit of the technology. At this point,
we now see ads online targeted to emails we have written or Google searches
we have performed. Lane will ultimately explain the need for legislation that
protects our privacy in the face of these new everyday technologies. We will
publish this exciting new book in the Fall of 2009.
