Boston Globe, Sunday, September 2nd issue, Mary Oliver listed as
one of seven wonders in Massachusetts in an op-ed by Renée Loth:
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2007/09/02/our_own_seven_wonders/ Mary Oliver. In a region that has produced most of the nation's
poet laureates, it is risky to single out one fragile 71-year-old bard of
Provincetown. But Mary Oliver, who won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1983,
is my choice for her joyous, accessible, intimate observations of the natural
world. Her "Wild Geese" has become so popular it now graces posters
in dorm rooms across the land. But don't hold that against her. Read almost
anything in "New and Selected Poems." She teaches us the profound
act of paying attention - a living wonder that makes it possible to appreciate
all the others.

Boston Globe, book picked as a Fall favorite in the September 4th
issue:

We end with a book that sounds interesting and hard to categorize. What
does it mean that Americans now want to retire early, but typically live into
their 90s? Psychotherapist Lillian B. Rubin, whose best-selling book about
marriage was "Intimate Strangers," reflects on later life in "60
on Up: The Truth About Aging in America" (September). Rubin, in her early
80s and a very good writer, explores the good news/bad news about greater
longevity of today's Americans.

New Acquisitions:
LGBT voices have largely been absent from debates around crime, punishment
and justice, but a new book by organizer Andrea Ritchie, lawyer Joey Mogul
and Quaker activist Kay Whitlock will provide a much needed corrective. The
book, which will be in Michael Bronskis QUEER IDEAS series in fall 09,
will examine both historical and current experiences of LGBT people within
all aspects of the legal system that is, as targets of discriminatory
laws, subjects of police harassment and brutality, as criminal defendants,
prisoners and survivors of violent crimes. Itll also address future
correctives and innovative approaches towards creating a better, safer and
more progressive system.
Alan Collinge is an activist for student loan justice and founder of StudentLoanJustice.org,
a grassroots organization and Political Action Committee. His groundbreaking
book, STUDENT LOAN SCAM, will analyze the predatory nature of student loans,
including its history and the impact on the citizenry, and will offer solutions
for the current crisis. Earlier this year he embarked on a 22,000 mile bus
tour where he visited the home districts of nearly every member of the new
House and Senate education committees to fight for legislative change in higher
education policy. Senators Clinton and Obama have both used Collinges
research, and he has been featured on 60 Minutes, and also in print media
including Fortune Magazine, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Village Voice,
and Inside Higher Education. The book will be on our fall 08 list.

Booklist, review in the September 1st issue:
For those struggling with contradictions between organized religion
and their personal beliefs, this testament to living an intimately unique
brand of Catholicism will be welcome reading . . . spiritually minded will
find food for thought and much to embrace in these thought-provoking pages.
Publishers Weekly, review in the July 9th issue:
Mairs is an extraordinary woman . . . Her self-deprecating humor is
wonderful-much like the writing of Anne Lamott, although Mairs manages to
create her own style.
