On Saturday, June 23rd, at an annual gathering of the Unitarian Universalist
Association in Portland, OR, Beacon Press commemorated its 35th anniversary
of the publication of the Pentagon Papers with a panel discussion, which included
Senator Mike Gravel, Daniel Ellsberg, and former UUA President Robert West.
The lively panel was moderated by Amy Goodman in front of a crowd nearing 4,000-5,000
people and garnered praise in media forums outside of the Unitarian gathering:

Between the Lines (Michigan LGBT Weekly), Beacon Press praised for
launching series in June 7th issue:
"Interestingly, Beacon is launching the series at the same time many
mass market publishing houses are moving away from LBGT genre books. The national
InsightOut Book Club has been cancelled and recent shuffling in the industry
has left many editors of LBGT genre books looking for work."
"'Beacon actually has, as a part of their mission, to work on social
justice issues. So this very much fits into what Beacon is mandated to do.
They have prioritized this,' Bronski said."
Between the Lines (and online at PrideSource.com), Out Law
reviewed in the June 15th issue:
"Lisa Keen has created an important, vibrant book that will serve as
both a guide for LBGT youth looking to make sure they know their legal rights,
and as an historical document for future generations to mark the community's
growth."
"From a legal perspective, she hits the nail dead on its head in providing
very accurate legal advice while making sure to point out the obvious loopholes
. . . If you're looking for a solid resource on the law for LGBT youth, consider
checking out Out Law. This may be a new survival guide. Knowledge is half
the battle, and Out Law certainly presents ways to be able to utilize the
law to fight bullying and discrimination."
"Polikoff mobilizes an impressive array of legal history and contemporary
court cases to show how marriage, whether same-sex or heterosexual, has ceased
to be the only place where people incur long-term obligations. She argues
vigorously that our society needs to find new ways of determining when legally
enforceable responsibilities and entitlements have accrued in interpersonal
relationships."
